This is a view of the more complete of the two
remaining towers of Hadleigh Castle, Essex, taken one fine winter's
morning. A dramatic sky had began to build up, adding to the tower's
commanding view of the Thames Estuary.
The castle has had a long and chequered history. Construction took place
over centuries and under the reign and direction of several monarchs. Set
on a hill, it offers spectacular views across the Thames and Canvey Island
and in the direction of Southend on Sea. This positioning, however, can
also make it very cold on a windy winter's day!
The photograph is very detailed - much, much more so than the scan which
is a very poor copy because of the small file size involved in webpage
creation.
